Necessary approved portable fire extinguishers shall be maintained as
set forth in Section 1163.13e-2, e-3 and e-4 of the New York State Uniform
Fire Prevention and Building Code.
The following listed occupancies shall maintain the respective portable
fire appliances:
A. Ammunition-construction jobs: one two-and-one-half-gallon
water-type extinguisher where ammunition or explosives are stored.
B. Construction, general.
(1) For each 2,500 square feet of floor area on each floor,
including cellar:
(a) A forty-gallon water cask with four buckets;
(b) One safety bucket tank with five buckets; or
(c) One two-and-one-half-gallon water-type extinguisher.
(2) Also, one additional similar extinguisher at each shed
or locker used by painters, plumbers and carpenters.
(3) Also, one two-and-one-half-gallon water-type extinguisher
on each floor where good scaffold has been erected to a height greater than
40 feet. This extinguisher shall be readily accessible to the scaffold.
C. Retail dry cleaning: two five-pound dry-chemical-type
extinguishers.
D. Fireworks: All holders of permits for fireworks shall
provide at least six ten-quart buckets of water and six ten-quart buckets
of sand.
E. Open-air-type garage: two two-and-one-half-gallon units
of approved fire protection appliances located near the access entrance.
F. Storage areas for gasoline hi-lows and tractors: one
two and one-half-gallon water-type extinguisher and two sand pails.
G. Hospitals, nursing homes and convalescent homes. An extinguisher
in the smoking room or in a corridor where it can be seen by someone leaving
the smoking room is satisfactory.
H. Liquefied petroleum gas tar kettles: for each kettle
unit, four-pound CO2 or dry chemical or sufficient
pails of sand.
I. Heating and drying on construction jobs: on each floor
where heaters are used:
(1) Three-fourths-inch hose with water supply to reach all
points;
(2) Six water pails for each 500 square feet; or
(3) Approved nonfreezing-type extinguisher.
J. Motor vehicle repair shop: applies if an oxygen-acetylene
torch is used and an asbestos screen is used to separate the torch operation
area. There shall be attached to the screen one fifteen-pound CO2-type
extinguisher and two pails of sand.
K. Oil burners: one two-quart-type extinguisher suitable
for oil fires or two sand pails.
L. Packing boxes, crates and barrels (empty).
(1) Twelve ten-quart water buckets for every 2,500 square
feet of area; or
(2) One-inch hose and 1/2 nozzle with adequate water supply
and sufficient hose to reach all parts of enclosure.
M. Torch work (oxygen and combustive gas): fully charged
water hose or a sufficient number of water-type extinguishers at the location
and exposed areas of torch operations.
N. Tank trucks transporting flammable mixtures or compressed
gases: four-quart carbon-tetrachloride-type extinguisher or one seven-and-one-half-pound
CO2 or five-pound drypowder extinguisher located in
the cab.
