In order to comply with the laws of New York State, Nassau County,
Town of Oyster Bay and the City of Glen Cove, and in order to ensure
the health, safety and general welfare of the residents of the Incorporated
Village of Centre Island and its employees, the following regulations
are necessary and become effective upon filing with the Secretary
of State, New York State.
As used in this Article, the following terms shall have the
meanings indicated:
ASHES
Include the residue from burning wood, coal, coke or other
combustible materials.
GARBAGE
Includes wastes from preparation and cooking of food, combustible
containers, magazines and small household items which are capable
of combustion, fermentation or decay. This shall not include any recyclable
items, hazardous materials or rubbish.
HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
Include solid or liquid waste whose combustion at an incinerator
would cause danger from residue ash, waste gases or explosions. These
are generally defined by the Town of Oyster Bay S.T.O.P. Program and
City of Glen Cove incinerator and shall include but not be limited
to chemicals, cleaners, paints, oils, automobile tires and batteries
and aerosol cans. In addition, they shall include explosives, fireworks,
radioactive materials, infectious materials, propane tanks, etc.
RECYCLABLES
Include:

GLASSClear (flint), amber and green glass food and beverage containers, rinsed clean of food residue.
C.
ALUMINUM CANSFood and beverage containers, rinsed clean of food residue.
D.
PLASTICSFood and beverage containers and other nonhazardous household commodities, rinsed clean of residue.
E.
NEWSPRINTAll newspapers and advertisements, supplements, comics and enclosures, but exclusive of magazines.
REFUSE
A general term, which includes ashes, garbage, recyclables
and rubbish.
RUBBISH
Includes any and all materials of a generally combustible
nature not included under the terms "ashes" and "garbage," including
but not limited to such items as rugs, furniture, ranges, refrigerators,
televisions, mattresses, etc.
The Village shall have the right to refuse to collect during
the continuation of any violation of this Article.
Any person knowingly placing hazardous products in a receptacle
for collection shall be guilty of committing a violation under the
Penal Law of the State of New York and is punishable by a fine of
up to $250. Each day the violation continues shall be deemed a separate
and distinct offense hereunder.
