The Select Board shall appoint some competent lawyer to act as Town Counsel. Town Counsel shall have the care of all legal actions that are authorized to be brought or defended by the Town, except for those matters which are assigned to the Town Agent.
The Select Board, after consultation with Town Counsel, may retain other legal counsel for Town labor negotiations and related contract issues as well as particular issues where a conflict of interest exists or where specialized legal expertise is required.

The Select Board is authorized to contract for Town Counsel services on terms not to exceed three years.
The Select Board, upon recommendation of Town Counsel may appoint some competent lawyer as Assistant Town Counsel upon terms and conditions as they may determine.
The Town Counsel, and any counsel acting by or on his or her behalf, shall have all of the authority and right given to Town Counsel under the laws and statutes, as amended, of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
