Automatic sprinkler systems, where required by this article,
shall comply with the requirements set forth in the most recent edition
of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Pamphlets 13 and
13D regarding automatic sprinkler systems.

It shall be unlawful for any owner or occupant of any building
subject to the provisions of this article to occupy or to permit the
occupancy of any premises regulated herein, unless the required automatic
sprinkler system is installed and operable. Automatic sprinkler systems
shall be required to be provided, installed and maintained in the
following structures.
(a) In all new construction in excess of 5,000 square feet in area, and
in all new construction of detached single family and attached two
family residences, regardless of size.
(b) All new construction for any use which structure contains a passenger
elevator unit.
(c) All new construction in excess of 2,000 square feet in area devoted
to adult day care, child care, nurseries and educational uses.
(d) In all existing structures where there is any remodeling, alterations
or additions that will increase the square footage of the existing
structure by more than 2,000 square feet, and which will result in
a total area of the structure, including the previous existing structure
and the addition, in excess of 5,000 square feet.
(e) Any existing structure which requires reconstruction of 50% or more
of said structure if said reconstruction results in a building in
excess of 5,000 square feet in area.
(f) Any reconstruction of an existing detached single family or attached
two family residence which results in the removal and replacement
of 50% or more of the existing first floor exterior wall.

All automatic sprinkler systems shall be installed and maintained
in accordance with NFPA Pamphlets 13 and 13D governing sprinkler systems.
The following additional requirements shall also apply:
(a) Any sprinklered structure in excess of 10,000 square feet in area
shall have a minimum of one 1 3/4-inch Fire Department hose drop
at least 150 feet in length with brass adjustable nozzle connected
to the system, for each 10,000 square feet of floor area. In any multi-story
structure to which this provision applies, one such hose with adjustable
nozzle shall be provided on each floor.
(b) Any sprinkler system in excess of 5,000 square feet in area shall
have a jockey pump to maintain system pressure.
(c) All sprinkler system pumps shall be equipped with a knox box mounted
in a conspicuous location on the exterior of the building in an approved
location.
(d) The requirements of this article shall not be construed to require
the installation of sprinklers in any vault, room, or portion of a
building where the application of water will cause or increase the
risk of fire or explosion, nor shall the provisions of this article
be construed to require any interference with any other approved automatic
fire protection equipment.
(e) All sprinkler systems shall be equipped with backflow prevention
devices.

No automatic sprinkler system may be installed or altered in
any building in the Village without a permit having first been obtained
from the Village Code Administration Department. Prior to any such
permit being issued, all requests for a permit or for any variation,
substitution or exemption from the requirements of this chapter must
be submitted in writing to the Fire Marshal or the chief fire inspector.

In the event that the owner or occupant of any building is informed
that the provisions of this article apply to such building, such owner
or occupant may appeal to the Village Board in writing within 30 days
after receiving written notification from the Fire Marshal or the
chief fire inspector of such application.

Any person who violates any terms of this article shall be subject
to a fine of not less than $50 nor more than $500 for each offense.
For the purposes of this article, each day that a violation exists
shall constitute a separate offense. The imposition of any penalty
for any offense under the provisions of this article shall not be
authorization for the continuance of such violation, and all such
persons cited under this article shall be required to correct all
violations immediately.
